51ºÚÁÏ Supports... World Health Day

Posted 07/04/25

07 April 2025Ìý : World Health Day will kick off a year-long campaign on maternal and newborn health. It's a day that calls for better healthcare access, skilled birth attendants, and mental health support for mothers. With high maternal and newborn mortality rates, the campaign urges global action to ensure safer pregnancies and healthier futures.

This task is critical. Based on current trends, a staggering 4 out of 5 countries are off track to meet targets for improving maternal survival by 2030. 1 in 3 will fail to meet targets for reducing newborn deaths.

What is World Health Day?

7 April of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day and draws attention to a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organisation (WHO). As a global day of awareness, World Health Day commonly raises concern for the millions of people across the globe who are vulnerable due to poor health or lack of nutritional food and drink.

Over the past 50 years, World Health Day has brought to light important health issues, such as mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change. The theme for World Health Day 2025 is "Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures" – a theme which focuses on enhancing maternal and newborn health and survival, calling on governments and health organisations to invest in high-impact interventions to cut preventable deaths and improve long-term health outcomes for mothers and babies.

Women and families everywhere need high quality care that supports them physically and emotionally, before, during and after birth. Thus, healthcare systems must evolve to manage the many health issues that impact maternal and newborn health. These not only include direct complications relating to the care and treatment of women during childbirth process, but also includes mental health conditions and family planning.

When relating World Health Day to the workplace, this can cover both physical and mental health. To make employees and colleagues feel respected and valued, organisations can use World Health Day to kickstart programmes that support staff members:

  • Giving people a sense of purpose: Having a sense of purpose at work can give people direction, goals to work towards and feelings of intention. Having a career that encourages goal-setting can really drive positive mental health in the workplace.
  • Making it easy for staff to book medical appointments: As a manager, senior leader or director of an organisation, you could let staff take paid leave for appointments, or even build in flexitime for the employees to work around these appointments.
  • Inspiring creativity: In the corporate world in particular, some people might feel detached from their creative side. To provide a more productive and innovative work environment, embed creativity into your core values and offer training for creative programmes.
  • Prioritising having a safe working environment: Taking breaks in the workplace has lots of health benefits; better concentration levels, improved creativity and higher engagement levels are all things that can help boost our morale at work. It is also important to make sure the physical environment is a safe one that won't cause work-related injuries.
  • Offering mental health support groups: These groups can be vital in supporting staff with mental health challenges that they might be facing, or may face in the future.Ìý
  • Encouraging staff to be active: Encourage staff to find the motivation to stay active after work. Workplaces can do this by, for example, setting up a yoga class at work for people to get involved in, with a live link for remote workers to join in from the comfort of their own home. Workplaces could even host a fitness challenge that staff can get involved in, such as running or walking challenges throughout the working day.
