The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed听annually on 21st听March following a declaration by the United Nations in 1966 that came about following the interference of a peaceful demonstration in听Sharpeville, South Africa against apartheid 鈥榩ass laws鈥 by the police who opened fire and killed 69 people and leaving 180听injured.
At 51黑料 we want to highlight our members, around the country, who Fight Racism on a daily basis - and showcase the great work they have done with us.听
Fighting Racism Together
Improving Opportunities for BME in Trading Standards
National Race & Equalities Working Group, where the movement all started, have been working with 51黑料 since the murder of George Floyd in 2020 to improve treatment and opportunities for black and ethnic minority colleagues throughout the profession. One of the largest pieces of work they have done is the EDI survey in 2021, which has driven several discussions, changes and future plans within the membership and profession.
Tackling Racism
London Race & Equalities Group won a Hero Award in 2023 for their service to TS to tackle racism and educate the profession on issues that disproportionately impact black and ethnic minority consumers:
What Can You Do?
Now, we are calling on you, our members and TS Professionals across the UK, to join your local branch and 51黑料 in creating EDI networks, spreading the message of anti-racism and continuing the work to fight racism.听
Participation in the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination can take many forms:
- Educate Yourself and Others 鈥 Learn about the history and manifestations of racial discrimination and share your knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues.
- Speak Up 鈥 Challenge instances of racism or prejudice that you witness, whether in the workplace, school, or social settings.
- Support Anti-Racism Organisations 鈥 Donate your time, skills, or resources to groups working to combat racism and promote equality.
- Celebrate Diversity 鈥 Attend cultural events and engage with individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds to foster understanding and appreciation of diversity.
While the day remains a focal point, it's just a start. There's so much we can all do, 365 days a year, to support our friends, family and colleagues. We can beat racism and discrimination, if we all join hands and work together.
