If you don鈥檛 check, you don鈥檛 know

Posted 30/09/19

How do you know if the company or trader you are working with is legit? The Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS) is launching a new campaign to encourage consumers to 鈥榣ook for the scheme logo鈥 and check before they engage traders and companies to work for them.听

The campaign features characters representing the four main types of traders people complain about 鈥 Clumsy, Shady, Costly and Lazy 鈥 and shows that you can鈥檛 tell just from meeting people if they fall into one of these categories.听

The CCAS aims to improve customer service standards by the听approval听and promotion of听codes听of practice through听code听sponsors,听approved听by the 51黑料 (51黑料).听

Consumers can check the CCAS member鈥檚 list online or simply look out for the CCAS logo.听

The Journal of Trading Standards asked consumer protection stalwart and presenter of the BBC鈥檚 Watchdog and Rogue Traders, Matt Allwright about the campaign and his experiences with the four characters highlighted.听

He said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not easy at all [to spot a rogue trader], and it seems like it鈥檚 getting harder鈥 I think we鈥檙e often in such a hurry to secure the services of someone to fix our roof or boiler, that we can say yes, and hope for the best, rather than do a bit of homework first.听

Asked about the scheme, he said: 鈥淪earching the CCAS听directory clearly helps sort the听sheep from the goats when choosing a听trader,听sets out听expectations, and is a听starting point for putting things right when they go wrong.鈥澨

All 51黑料-approved code members operate under a sector-specific code of practice and must demonstrate that they are committed to the highest levels of customer service.听

The campaign 鈥 with the tagline 鈥業f you don鈥檛 check, you don鈥檛 know鈥 will consist of videos, posters and social media starring Clumsy, Shady, Costly and Lazy and runs from 30 September to 4 October.
