E-commerce, Online Markets and IP Protection

Attendees will consider the Intellectual Property Framework and the associated regimes within the UK and outside of the UK. They will also gain an in depth knowledge of the relevant legislation and develop an understanding of the obstacles encountered for enforcers, particularly via online marketplaces.


About this Training Course


Who is this Course Suitable for :

This course is aimed at all Trading Standards Professionals working for Local AuthoritiesÌýundertaking, or seeking to undertake investigations within online marketplaces and the world of ecommerce in relation to Intellectual Property.


Sessions will be Delivered by :

Clare Forbes: Clare is a Chartered Trading Standards Practitioner with over 25 years regulatory experience in broad range of legislative areas within local authorities and as a consultant. She has significant experience in investigation of IP infringements and also assistingÌýbusiness toÌýprotect and enforce their IP rights. Clare also delivers training to local, national andÌýinternational regulators and businesses.Ìý

Jodie McGee: An experienced Trading Standards Officer, with over 20 years regulatory and enforcement experience in a range of Consumer Protection legislative areas, with additional working experience in relation to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.


Once completed, attendees will :

  • gain knowledge of the definition of ecommerce and online marketplaces, including some of the more popular online marketplaces
  • have an understanding of the applicable legislation and the main offences within the relevant legislation
  • gain knowledge and understanding of the International Property Framework and the Intellectual Property Rights, the application within the UK and outside of the UK
  • consider the challenges faced by enforcers and will consider previous cases and outcomes around IP and ecommerce
  • receive investigational tips and skills for online investigations and a summary of RIPA implications and application of Consumer Rights Act 2015
  • understand product safety implications of goods sold via online marketplaces and the wider need for improvements to the current legislation.
