In this blog post I will attempt to explain the Dr Coimbra protocol in short, as many are looking for information about the Coimbra Protocol but there is so much information where a lot of if is to be found in ‘doctor language’ which again can be daunting to those who are already sick and need to read this in an easier way.

Who is Doctor Coimbra?
Dr. Cicero Galli Coimbra is a neurologist and a professor practicing in São Paulo, Brazil who has developed the Coimbra Protocol for the suppression of auto immune diseases.
What is the Coimbra Protocol?
Dr. Cicero Galli Coimbra has developed a protocol where he has been able to successfully suppress disease activity in about 95% of MS cases with individually tailored doses of vitamin D3 plus other supplements such as magnesium and riboflavin (vitamin B2).
What types of auto immune diseases have been treated with this protocol?
Multiple Sclerosis (all types of MS), Arthritis Rheumatoid, Lupus, Lyme, Alopecia, Bronchitis, Depression, Atopic Depression, Crohn’s Disease, Endometriosis, Fibromyalgia, Hypertension, Infertility, Psoriasis, Ménière Syndromes, ADEM Syndromes, Sjögren, Vitiligo, Endometriosis, Hashimoto and many others. What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?
Since there is a majority of people with MS treated are on the Coimbra Protocol, I am going to write WebMD’s definition here; «MS happens when your immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect them. Without this outer shell, your nerves become damaged. Scar tissue may form».
The damage means your brain can’t send signals through your body correctly. Your nerves also don’t work as they should to help you move and feel. As a result, you may have symptoms like:
- Trouble walking
- Feeling tired
- Muscle weakness or spasms
- Blurred or double vision
- Numbness and tingling
- Sexual problems
- Poor bladder or bowel control
- Pain
- Depression
- Problems focusing or remembering
Who should consider going on the protocol and WHO SHOULD NOT consider going on the protocol?
If you have an auto immune disease, you can consider starting with the protocol. If you DO NOT have an autoimmune disease, then you can take up to 10 000 iu of vitamin D according to Dr Coimbra which he calls a paltry dose.
Does the protocol involve any diet?
Not a diet per se but you need to eat calcium restricted. That means that all dairy, calcium fortified or enriched products and most nuts and seeds must be avoided. There is calcium in many foods but the before mentioned are the most important to avoid . Other than that it is not demanded to have a gluten free diet, but many find that to help reducing inflammation if they respond negatively to it. Less high carbohydrates and sugars also help your body fight off disease.
However, there are many diets that work but not for all people. You can get lost in Wahls, Swank, Jenkins, OMS, Paleo, High Fat, low carb diets etc. Since I have tried some diets in my life and none seemed to work, I took a gene test that helped me find out what genes I have and what diet works for me. I found out that I am not allergic to gluten, and other things that was quite helpful for me to understand how my body responds to food. You can see the interview about it here.
Where to find a Protocol Doctor?
Here is a link to a Google map that lists the Protocol Doctors available. By clicking on the flags you will get them listed.
You will also need to take blood and urine tests before you start the Coimbra Protocol
You will have to ask your GP to take blood tests before you start the protocol so your Protocol Doctor can start treating you. You can say you have started on a protocol with an international protocol doctor
Then follow-up visits require labs 4, 5, 18 and 19
Pamplet to bring to your doctor (GP)
You might want to print out and bring this pamplet to your general practitioner so she/he can be informed about the protocol. Coimbra Pamplet
Supplements on the protocol
In this video we talk about the main supplements taken on the protocol even though the doses recommended are for the normal, healthy person. (Click on the image below).
Two amazing studies of vitamin D independent of the Coimbra Protocol.
Amazing study 1
Jodie Burton, MD, a neurologist at the University of Toronto explained that a study involving relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis patients divided into two groups.
Also, people taking high-dose vitamin D suffered 41% fewer relapses than the year before the study began, compared with 17% of those taking typical doses. Burton said that the people taking high doses of vitamin D did not suffer any significant side effects.
In people given high-dose vitamin D in the study, T cell activity dropped significantly. That did not happen in people who took lower doses», Burton told WebMD.
