Internet Intermediaries Working Group (IIWG)
Internet Platforms
Internet platforms have become an integral part of the way we shop, socially interact, invest, entertain and travel. Platforms include:
• Marketplaces
• Social Media Networks
• Discount, Voucher & Cashback Platforms
• Forums
• App Stores
• Sharing Economy operators
• Crowdfunding
• Review Sites
The majority of UK citizens have shopped on marketplaces the past 12 months. A third of the world is on social media. The world's top three marketplaces, combined, are estimated to make up a over third of global online sales. By 2025, the Sharing Economy is forecast to account for half the market share in five markets. For example, in the accommodation market, Airbnb has already overtaken the world’s biggest traditional hotel chain in terms of number of rooms.
Platforms provide convenience for consumers and enable them to purchase products from sellers worldwide. However, platforms also pose certain challenges in terms of misleading or fraudulent content and dangerous products by sellers using them. For this reason, various UK consumer protection regulators, the Police and HMRC formed the Internet Intermediaries Working Group (IIWG).
The remit of the IIWG is to work with platforms to ensure a consistent approach across the Sector to reduce harms to consumers and business users. The scope and remit of the IIWG is detailed in their Terms of Reference.
The IIWG created a guide for platforms to outline the key legislation and Best Practice which we consider will make a significant impact in reducing the risk of harm to the platform’s consumer and business users.
